While bright white everything has been dominating the home decor space for some time, there has been a significant rise in the number of people looking for something different. Search for “dark green accent wall” and you’ll get almost 80 million results. Dark green is the perfect color to complement woody, earthy tones and leather. It’s easy to brighten up with crisp white accents too, so it’s no surprise that despite being initially unsure about which color to go with, the Davis family picked Emerald green for their dining room makeover.

From the Beginning

The Davis family was initially looking for something completely different than what they ended up with. During my initial phone conversation with them, they described what they thought they were looking for. After hearing what they had in mind for the vibe and tone of their room, I steered them toward one of my most elegant designs, The Parisian. It ended up being a great choice.

Luxury and Elegance

One of the things that I do during my free consultation is to get a feel for what the client is looking for. In this case, I noticed that their dining room, especially the chandelier, was very luxurious and elegant. The rest of their space was already decorated in the same elevated style. Their space already incorporated accents of the same green that we ended up using for the accent wall. To make sure that the accent wall fits in well with their home, the Parisian design was a perfect choice.

The Artistic Process

The process for designing and installing an accent wall is quite fluid. It always starts with an initial quote. Some clients come to me and know exactly what it is they want, the colors they want, the design they want, etc. Others might have a Pinterest board for inspiration that they can share with me to help me figure out their design style. There are even a few that come to me just knowing they want an accent wall and give me completely free reign to design. Regardless of what clients are looking for, I strive for clients to feel involved in every step of the process.

Although we ended up going in a different direction than what they wanted initially, they did add a really unique design element that I had never done before. As I mentioned before, dark green pairs really well with a crisp white. The client suggested that we use two colors, which I thought was unique and elegant.

Unique Wall, Unique Challenges

The Parisian design is my most detailed design, which is definitely part of what makes it so elegant-looking. There is also significantly more labor involved in installing a wall with this design. For the Davis family, this was multiplied because I was actually doing two walls with the Parisian design, but each one had its own paint color. There was also a window to work around, so for this very symmetrical design, I had to do some creative problem solving to make sure the window was incorporated into the design.

Making Connections

One of the best parts of the job is connecting with my clients. Especially when I am installing a feature wall in a private home, the experience is often pretty intimate. We spend a lot of time in the same space while I am installing and I really enjoy taking my time to get to know the clients as much as possible. The Davis’ have two toddlers who were cheering me on the whole time, saying, “go Uncle Carl!”. I always take a photo of my clients and their new accent wall after bringing their vision to life.

The Grand Reveal

The final outcome of this project speaks for itself. While the design is quite modern, it still feels sophisticated and luxurious. In fact, they love the final product so much that they’re looking forward to adding additional accent walls to their home very soon.
