Nesting with Sarah | dream nursery for twins
Project Details
Project Style: Modern Board and Batten
Paint Colors Used: Behr - Pure White
Location of Wall: Nursery + Entryway
Project Completion Time: 4 days total, 2 per wall
When Sarah contacted me requesting an accent wall for both their entryway and their nursery for their twins, I ended up moving around my schedule to make sure I completed this project in time. Her due date was coming up quickly and I really wanted her to be able to have a finished space to bring her twins home to! I was so flattered that they wanted me to be part of the process of bringing her dream nursery to fruition.
From Consultation to Reality
Working with me always starts with an initial quote. I can typically get all the information I need for a project over the phone. Every project is different, but for this one, the clients knew exactly the look and style they were trying to achieve for both parts of their home. The nursery in particular was completely finished with the exception of the accent wall.
In the entryway, they wanted to make sure that whoever comes into their home feels very welcomed. You can see they have family photos above the accent wall line and added hooks. The top line also acts as a shelf. Those added details allow the space to act as a mudroom as well. These details are not only a stylish addition but a functional one as well.
Tricks of the Trade
A typical board and batten style takes up about 2/3 of the wall, or 6 of the 9 feet in a standard home. One big misconception about this style of wall is that because it only takes up part of the wall, the time and labor are reduced. Plenty of DIY projects will have you believe that you can simply nail boards to the wall to give the board and batten look without doing a true install.
In reality, a true professional will know that to make sure this style lasts and is done properly, the wall’s texture needs to be completely hidden. I personally use Temper hardwood panel substrate to make sure the wall has the same texture as the design I install. Board and batten, when done correctly, is in fact as much time and labor as a full wall.
You can see the wall here prepped for painting. I’ve covered the walls to ensure a smooth surface and I’ve covered all the seams with my design. This gives the wall a really finished, professional look that is difficult to replicate for the average DIY-er
The Final Product
This was such a special project for me. Sarah’s twins were born the following week and it was so cool for me to be able to help her welcome her babies into the world with this incredible nursery. All credit to Sarah for her amazing vision for these spaces!
